From Liberation to Advocacy: The Meaning of Passover for Today’s Jewish Community

“כל דכפין ייתי וייכול כל דצריך ייתי ויפס”

“Whoever is hungry, let him come and eat; whoever is in need, let him come and celebrate Passover.” -Passover Haggadah

Passover is a holiday that is deeply rooted in Jewish history and tradition. It commemorates the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt, and is a time for reflection, gratitude, and celebration. But Passover is also a time when many Jews remember the poverty and hardship that their ancestors endured, and strive to help those who are currently struggling with poverty and oppression.

In the Passover story, as part of the Jewish people’s liberation from slavery, they were commanded to eat matzah, or unleavened bread, during the Passover holiday. Matzah is a simple and humble food, made from flour and water without any yeast or other leavening agents. It is a symbol of the meager rations the Jewish slaves had to subsist on during their enslavement, and a reminder of the poverty and hardship they endured.

Today, many Jewish families and communities continue to observe the tradition of eating matzah during Passover. But Passover is also a time when Jews make an effort to help those who are currently experiencing poverty and oppression. In this way, Passover serves as a call to action to work towards justice and equality for all people.

There are many ways that Jews and others can help fight poverty and oppression during Passover and throughout the year. Year round Kindness Initiative is committed to raising awareness in our community about our Jewish community members experiencing financial instability. Our primary mission is to assist these individuals and families to navigate and access the resources they need.

This Passover, in collaboration with Choose Kindness Foundation, Kindness Initiative provided Pesach packages or “Maot Chitim.” These beautiful packages were designated for Kindness Initiative members as well as families in need who visit kindnessG’MACH. The idea behind the package is to provide those in need with the means to celebrate the holiday, and to remind everyone of the importance of empathy and generosity. By providing families with the necessary supplies to celebrate Passover, the Kindness Initiative is helping to ensure that everyone in the San Diego community can participate in the holiday and feel connected to their Jewish heritage.

The Kindness Initiative organizes a wide range of other initiatives and events aimed at promoting kindness and social justice in the San Diego community. These include other holiday gift drives, volunteer opportunities, and programs that work to alleviate issues related to financial insecurity.

Passover is a time when Jews remember their history of poverty and oppression, and strive to make a difference in the lives of others who are currently struggling. By working together to fight poverty and inequality, we can help to create a world that is more just and equitable for all. Organizations like Kindness Initiative San Diego are leading the way in this effort, inspiring acts of kindness and compassion in the Jewish community and beyond. As we celebrate Passover and reflect on our history and traditions, let us also remember the importance of reaching out to those in need, and working towards a brighter future for all.
